Our story
We are getting married on a bluff above the Pacific, which is where most of our time together has gone anyway, on grey mornings and at low tide.

The eighteenth of September, two thousand twenty-seven
Seymour Marine Discovery Center, on the bluff at Terrace Point
Optional, and very welcome
Somewhere downtown, so come say hello if you are in town early.
Seymour Marine Discovery Center
Park on site and follow the path toward the water.
Outdoors on the bluff with the ocean behind us, and about half an hour long.
Drinks on the terrace with the exhibits open to wander.
A seated dinner in the main hall.
The fog usually arrives by then, which is worth stepping outside for.
We are still settling the times with the venue, and will fill them in here well before invitations go out.
The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is a working ocean research station at Long Marine Laboratory, part of UC Santa Cruz, on the last stretch of land before the water at Terrace Point.
Ms. Blue, an eighty-seven-foot blue whale skeleton, stands outside the building, and she is worth walking over to see. A path runs along the bluff to the overlook, where the ceremony will be, and dinner follows inside in the main hall.
There is a free lot on site, a short flat walk from the entrance, and rideshares can pull right up to the door.
Paved paths and packed gravel run out to the overlook, all on one level and step free.
| Airport | Drive | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| San Jose (SJC) | ~40 min | Closest and easiest |
| San Francisco (SFO) | ~1 hr 20 | Most flights |
| Monterey (MRY) | ~1 hr | Small, scenic drive |
Rent a car if you can. Santa Cruz is spread out along the coast and Highway 17 over the hill is not a road to rely on rideshares for.
Nearest the venue at about ten minutes away, quiet, with coffee and surf shops.
Walkable to dinner and bars; fifteen minutes to the Seymour Center.
Motels and rentals on the water. They book up early, because September is the good month here.
We are working on a room block and will post it here as soon as it is confirmed. If you would rather not wait, September fills up: book something refundable now.
A short list of the places we would take you ourselves.
Three miles of path along the edge of the ocean, from Natural Bridges to the harbor, with sea lions, surfers and pelicans along the way. Best at sunset.
Next door to the venue, with the arch and the tide pools, and monarch butterflies in the eucalyptus grove by October.
A seaside amusement park from 1907, with a wooden coaster that rattles. Unserious and completely worth it.
Downtown Santa Cruz has the bookshops, the taquerias, a very good record store and somewhere to eat on every block.
Old growth redwoods fifteen minutes up the hill from the coast, cool and dark under the trees.
Bluff trails north of town cross the farm fields and drop down to the coves, and it is windy enough out there that you will want a layer.
Cocktail attire, but dress for the coast. The ceremony is outside on gravel and grass, so consider your heels, and bring a real layer. The fog comes in off the water in the evening and it gets properly cold.
Both. Ceremony and cocktails outside on the bluff, dinner and dancing inside the main hall. There is shelter within a few steps the whole night.
We will name everyone who is invited on your reply card. If your children are on it, please bring them. The exhibits are open and they will have the better night.
If your invitation includes a guest, absolutely. Just add their name when you RSVP. We are limited by the room, so we cannot add beyond that.
A seated dinner with vegetarian options, so tell us about allergies and restrictions in your RSVP and we will take care of it.
Please put your phone away for the ceremony. Our photographer has it. After that, take everything you like; we will share a place to collect them.
September is usually the best month here, with clear afternoons around seventy that drop into the fifties after dark once the marine layer comes in.
Write to us at hello@maliaandjayson.com and we will answer properly.
Kindly reply by the first of August, 2027. One card per household is plenty.
